REQUIRED TRAINING FOR ADULT LEADERS IN A TROOP
Adult leaders in a troop are considered trained and eligible to wear the official Trained emblem when they have completed Youth Protection Training and the training courses outlined below, or have completed Youth Protection Training and a previous basic training course when the course was current.
3 REQUIRED COURSES FOR SCOUTMASTERS AND ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTERS: Youth Protection Training, Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters Position-Specific and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.
Youth Protection Training*: must be retaken every two years! This training increases awareness in youth protection issues, reviews all of the BSA youth protection policies and is required for all registered Scout leaders. Youth Protection training is available online or in person. Time to complete the online course varies but can usually be completed in 45 minutes or less. *In order to receive credit for completing Youth Protection Training online you will need to enter your council number (39 for OCBSA) and your member ID number. Your member ID number can be found on your membership card or you can obtain membership number from your unit’s committee chair or by calling the Orange County Council Service Center at 714-546-4990. Additionally, make sure your unit’s committee chair receives notice from you that you completed the training (send them your completion certificate or a copy of your signed training card).
Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Position-Specific is a live, in person one day course designed to help Scouters learn how to effectively carry out their Scouting roles, and give them the tools they need to lead successful Boy Scout troops.
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills focuses on building and improving leaders’ outdoor skills, as well as being fun and morale boosting. Participants will learn and review all of the outdoor skills that the BSA expects have been mastered by a First Class Scout. For Scoutmasters new to outdoor adventures, this will be a terrific opportunity to develop sufficient skills to help your Scouts in the outdoor program. Those experienced in various aspects of camping, hiking, and other outdoor skills can use this training to refine their knowledge, to learn how to teach their skills to Scouts, and to share what they know with other course participants.
2 REQUIRED COURSES FOR COMMITTEE MEMBERS: Youth Protection Training and Troop Committee Challenge.
Troop Committee Challenge is a fun and interactive online training that serves as a vital tool for new troop committee members as well as for veterans. The mission of the Troop Committee Challenge training is to help each troop committee work as a team to improve the Scouting experience for adult and youth members. It helps build the commitment of individual members as well as cultivates a better troop committee team. Troop Committee Challenge** may be completed online.
